What is the best way to fix a plastic preformed pond?

Posted by Pond Keeper

I was thinking silicone or melting plastic to repair the holes and cracks please let me know of any suggestions. Thanks!

Depending on whether the pond is a fairly simple shape, you might try covering it with a butyl liner and just considering the preformed plastic as a base for this. Butyl will last for many years if you get good quality. Otherwise I’d go to a water garden store and ask for advice on sealants, but this might depend on how bad the damage was – it sounds from your description as if there’s quite a lot of problems. Maybe you need to remove the preformed plastic and start again. If you don’t get a good liner in place, you will undoubtedly get more problems in the near future and will disturb all your plants and wildlife when you have to fix it again.

Garden Pond pump system.?

Posted by Pond Keeper

I have just got a new garden pond with a pump filter. Do I have to keep this running all the time or just a couple of hours a day?

It CAN work by only running it during certain hours. Such as the hottest hours of the day when oxygen drops lowest and mosquitoes are most active.

But that allows for a certain amount of "oops" which you can stray over the line and get a die-off. Especially if your area is prone to power outs or brownouts which are also most likely during the hottest hours of the day.

What you might consider is an alternate power source, or a secondary system on an alternate power source. Solar? Wind? Large dogs that love water (believe it or not can give the same benefits).

One that I love is a small decorative windmill if you are in a good area for it. The mill does nothing but power an old-style water mill lifting system. It lifts the water up then spills it down over something like filters or maybe a waterfall/fountain arrangement. Its very ornamental. Its NOT a good idea for a primary system but it makes a great secondary/backup so that you can run your electrical system only part time without as much concern.

If you do a search for windmill pond aerators, then get thru all the ads for big fancy systems, you can find some do-it-yourself projects that you might enjoy.

Turn Pond Water Pump Off At Night?

Posted by Pond Keeper

Is it a good idea to turn my pond water pump off at night and back on during the day to lower my electricity bill?

Kenny,

Pumps run 24 hours a day and are the chief piece of equipment responsible for keeping your pond healthy.

One of the most important things that you can do when setting up a new pond is to get the proper equipment installed. The pump you install should move at least 1/2 of the total pond volume for a water garden. The term “water garden” is assumed to be a pond with lots of plants and some fish. A koi pond usually has few plants and large fish requiring more filtration than a water garden. This type of pond is better off moving at least the full volume of the pond each hour.

Besides moving the water you also want to filter the water. The pump should move water through a filter that is sized for your pond. Biological filtration takes several weeks or months to mature to the point that it makes a major improvement on your water quality. The filter needs to run 24 hours a day 7 days a week to work.

I have a cracked preformed pond, want to know how to repair it?

Posted by Pond Keeper

Is there a fiberglass webbing, I can use to patch the hole, and not see the webbing under the water, after the repair?

You can try to dye the fiberglass webbing, or go to a pool place, maybe they have something that will match.
Hope this helped, good luck!!
