Pond Water Pump

The set up I prefer is a bottom drain, attached by a hose to an external pump, which pulls pond water off the bottom of the pond and pumps it into a veggie filter, from where it trickles back into the pond. Do not skimp on a pump, either. It is better to have one too big, than too small. And be sure to get a pond pump, not a sump pump or some other type. Pond pumps are sealed, whereas other types can leak oil, etc., back into your pond (bad for your fish and plants – could even kill them).

Pond water pump for garden ponds

Without any kind of pond water pump, a garden pond is still a wonderful thing. Even if it’s just a small pond made out of a preformed pond liner and has nothing but still water, a few plants and maybe a couple of goldfish. This setup will bring a pool of interest into the garden and ignite wonder for the nature and wildlife that naturally gravitates towards a garden pond. Should you decide that a water feature is required, such as a waterfall or fountain, that’s where the pond water pump comes into it. Or if you want to keep more specialised fish like koi carp which require much higher water quality and thus a filtration system which will need to be powered by a pond water pump.

There are two kinds of pond water pump, depending on how you want to go about the installation. A mains electricity pump is a powerful water pump that can drive a fast moving waterfall or big filtration unit for a larger pond or tank, but this requires serious attention to safety including burying the cables from the house to the pond inside armoured tubes at least 18 inches below the surface. For exact safety instructions always consult the pond water pump documentation and take advice from a qualified eletrician.

12v pond water pump

The other option is to go for a low voltage system with a 12v water pump for moving the pond water around. Low voltage water pumps are safer, probably longer lasting and easier to install. You have a transformer plugged into the mains in your garage or outhouse somewhere, then run a cable to the pond where the 12v pond water pump can do it’s job whenever the transformer is switched on. Low voltage pumps can be quite efficient, and certainly adequate for preventing stagnation in a small pond or driving a trickle fountain, similar water feature or small bio-filter to keep the pond water sweet.
